Unlike most of the South India, Pondicherry doesn't really feel a part of India or South India in particular. Back then, the French had colonized the city but some of that allure still hovers in this union territory. Pondicherry is located 160 kms south of Chennai, Tamil Nadu but has everything French about it. From the architecture, the road signs (which are in English and Tamil too) to the locals speaking fluent French and most restaurants serving steak and wine; you are bound to love this small city.
It is a quaint little place and you can see everything walking in one day. But if you are someone who loves to chill, unwind and simply relax, Pondicherry is the perfect place to slow down and connect to your soul. You may even opt for yoga and meditation or pottery or can just sit by the beach.
But if you are one of those who love to shop and shop till die; this city is your true paradise. The Visitors Centre in Auroville houses a number of stores selling a beautiful variety of products such as handicrafts, handmade items, soaps made with natural ingredients, perfumes, candles, books, clothes, organic products, jewellery and much more. Pondicherry is also home to the famous leather goods, home decor items and linen.
Famous as a centre for producing household linen and garment textiles in satin, twill, corduroy, poplin, chambray, oxford, cambric and Khadi (a home-spun fabric), Pondicherry is a fine place to purchase fabrics of various kinds.
